Subject: Dreams of Power: Theodoret of Cyr’s Reimagining of Church-State Relations in his Ecclesiastical History

Abstract: My research explores the way Theodoret of Cyr, a fifth-century bishop from Antioch, depicts the conflicts between bishops and monks and the imperial authority in the fourth century. The examination of this issue will further demonstrate the complex perceptions of Church-State dynamics reflected in Christian historiography, and the effect which Theodoret’s biography may have had on the narrative of his History.
Bio: Anita Reisler is a PhD candidate in the Department of Comparative Religion at the Hebrew University. She holds a BA in History and General and Comparative Literature, and an MA in History, as part of the interdisciplinary honours program for the study of Late Antiquity, both degrees are from the Hebrew University. Her PhD dissertation, Dreams of Power: Theodoret of Cyr’s Reimagining of Church-State Relations in his Ecclesiastical History, is being written under the supervision of Prof. David Satran and Dr. Yonatan Moss.
