Subject: Moshe Mendelssohn as a modernist-conservative commentator: Moshe Mendelssohn's way of interpreting the Bible

Supervisor: Prof. Benjamin Pollock

Abstract: In my research, I characterize Mendelssohn as a biblical commentator, in terms of the methods he used, the sources he relied on and the central themes he dealt with. I present Mendelssohn as a modern commentator on the one hand, who knew, and even used, historicalist, critical and literary methods of interpretation, and on the other hand - as someone who sees himself as part of the tradition of Jewish interpretation.

Bio: I completed my B.A in Bible studies and in the Program in Jewish Studies in the Hebrew University, as a part of "Revivim" Program. I proceeded to a M.A in the department of Jewish Thought, also in the Hebrew University. My M.A thesis dealt with the similar and the different between Shmuel David Luzzato's and Moses Mendelssohn's bible exegesis. My doctorate thesis will be focused on the interactions between Mendelssohn's commentary to the Bible and his systematic writings.
