Subject: The Specialized Flint Implements Production and Distribution Systems in the Early Bronze Age Upper Galilee in Light of the First Urban Wave of the Levant.
Advisor: Dr. Uri Davidovich
Abstract: As part of the proposed research, which will analyze the entire flint assemblage from the Early Bronze Age (hereafter EB, circa 3800/3700-2400 BCE) from the Hebrew University excavations at Tel Kedesh, I intend to examine the flint tool production system at the site in relation to the question of specialized industries in the EB, during which the first urban wave in the Levant occurred. I will examine the integration of local production in Kedesh with the pattern of production, distribution, and consumption at the site and in the surrounding sites in the Galilee. The importance of this research lies in flint being a central component in understanding the urban economy of the EB period, in which a specialized production system on a large scale and long-distance trade developed for the first time. Since flint assemblages are relatively neglected in terms of research attention in later prehistoric periods like the EB, where pottery was widely used, research on flint presents innovation both in theoretical and methodological aspects.
