Subject: The Large Podium at Herodiu.

Advisor: Dr. Orit Peleg

Abstract: Of the various sections within the complex built by Herod at Herodium, the structure referred to by Netzer as 'The Great Palace' is the most enigmatic. From the structure, located at the lower part of the slope connecting Lower Herodium to the palace sections further up the slope and at the top of the mountain, an impressive stone foundation has been preserved. Netzer interpreted it as an important palace wing, due to its large dimensions, its location, and its integration into the architectural axis of the larger Herodium complex.
However, a reanalysis of the foundation and the architectural context in which it was constructed, suggests new possibilities for interpreting the function of the structure. Surrounding the large foundation are ashlar stones, whose shape resembles those of the pilasters found in the walls of the Temple Mount and the Cave of the Patriarchs, and the overall architectural plan, including a central wide hall and an ambulatory corridor, evokes similarities to basilica-style buildings.
The research will include 3D modeling, survey, excavations, and comparative study, focusing on the analysis of the foundation plan and the architectural elements associated with it, in order to determine the structure’s function, character, and ornamentation.
The reconstruction of the foundation and the structure that stood above it will deepen our understanding of the construction phases at Herodium, the tension between private and public functions, the concept of Greater Herodium, and the relationships between its components. Additionally, the study will shed light on the balance between efficiency and grandeur in Herodian construction projects and even on the state administration.
