Space and Identity (2027)

Space of Identity – Identity of Space: The Rockefeller Museum in its Contexts (2027-2030)

The Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem, inaugurated as the Palestine Archaeological Museum in Jerusalem in 1938, is a unique case study for studying the complex relationship between space and collective identity. The proposed research group seeks to investigate the Rockefeller Museum from a variety of complementary vantage points, integrating diverse theoretical, methodological and interpretive perspectives in order to examine a range of relevant aspects, including the archaeology, architecture, museology, and archives of the Museum throughout the years. These will be set in the broader contexts—the municipal, national, and international—of the institution’s political and historical history. The group also aspires to make an active and fact-based contribution to the public debate on the future of the building and its collections..
