Talmud and Halakha
Subject: Agricultural construction and structures in the Talmudic literature.
Advisor: Dr. Yoav Rozental and Prof. Uzi Leibner
Abstract: In my research, I aim to identify agricultural structures described in Talmudic literature through examination and comparison with the material finds. Agriculture was a central economic focus in the Land of Israel during the Roman and Byzantine periods, and Talmudic literature devotes a significant portion to discussing agricultural issues of halachic significance. Various structures are mentioned in the Talmudic literature, as part of the agricultural activities. These structures were used in various stages of work in the fields, such as cultivating the land, buildings for the workers, and storage buildings. The structures are usually mentioned only by name, with little information about the characteristics of the structure or its uses. On the other hand, archaeology knows of different structures found in the field, but it is usually not possible to determine the use of these structures based on their physical characteristics. The combination of the literary description and the archaeological finds may help complete the picture.
