The research group Historical Linguistics and Formal Semantics, active at the Mandel Scholion Center from 2017 to 2020, aimed to advance the study of human language by bringing together two fields whose interaction has so far been limited: historical linguistics and formal semantics. The recently published volume Language Change: Theoretical and Empirical Perspectives, emerging from the group’s concluding conference, offers an up-to-date overview of research on language change, with a particular focus on semantic development. Drawing on innovative methods—including corpus analysis, typological comparison, and experimental work—the book provides new insights into mechanisms of linguistic change and highlights the contribution of formal tools to this field.
