Subject: 12th- and 13th-century English History writing.

Advisor: Prof. Ayelet Even-Ezra.

Abstract: The 12th century in England saw the emergence of an unprecedented interest in the writing of chronicles and histories. Much of this interest centered on pre-Saxon history and drew heavily on Breton and Welsh traditions. These texts include, among other things, numerous depictions of supernatural or preternatural phenomena and beings - particularly a striking number of demons. In my thesis, I aim to map these demonic appearances and examine their role both in the broader worldview of the period and within the specific framework of the newly developing historical writing.
