Subject: Early Modern Philosophy and Phenomenology.
Advisor: Dr. Noa Shein
Abstract: The paper will focus on the Cartesian Cogito and the way it loses its metaphysical status as a substance in the philosophies of Spinoza and Husserl. This transformation entails interpretive challenges concerning individuation – namely, the question of what constitutes an individual and how one individual is distinguished from others. It reveals a unique dynamic between the two thinkers, tied to their respective conceptions of the essence of the mind, or the ego.
