Subject:  The Unfolding of Biblical Poetry in Modern Hebrew Poetry – a Methodological Discussion

Supervisor: Dr. Tamar Hess and Dr. Ariel Zinder

Abstract:  The study will outline directions for a renewed methodological discussion of the reincarnations of biblical poetry in modern Hebrew poetry, emphasizing the poetic aspects of the dialogue formed between the modern Hebrew text and its ancient sources. The methodological discussion of the poetics of the biblical quote will be examined against a decisive turning point in modern Hebrew poetry, around the 1950s and 60s, with the distinct convergence of the poetic and colloquial language in terms of vocabulary, tone and style.
The proposed study will progress from a cross-sectional to a longitudinal analysis. The first two chapters will each deal with a central methodological question, to be examined with reference to the work of contemporary poets. The third and final chapter will be dedicated to Dan Pagis' oeuvre.

Bio:   I completed my BA and master's degrees at the Hebrew University's Department of Hebrew Literature. My master's thesis addressed the relationship between lyrical language and memory in the early poetry of Dan Pagis.
